Utilizing Feature 2: Videos

Short Video Clips

Just as you can upload images on Instagram, you can also upload videos. The videos can be as short as a second in length, or as long as one minute. When uploading a video on Instagram, you have the option to either film a short video (using either the front-facing or outward facing camera on your mobile device) or you can upload a video from your photo library.

Video clips can be a great opportunity to highlight content on your Instagram, but a lot of work is involved when creating these videos, even though they are extremely short. Take the video below as an example. The Van Gogh Museum’s Instagram account includes several short videos that highlight pieces from the collection and information about the artist:

This video, though short, showcases a high level of skill. Someone edited this short video to tell a short and compelling story. It’s pretty obvious from both the content and the quality that the video was not “filmed” through the Instagram app, but rather, a video editing tool/app was used to create this film.

If you have the time and resources, applications/software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and iMovie can be utilized to create high-quality videos. These videos can be a powerful tool to highlight objects from the collection, market an upcoming exhibition, or tell a compelling story.

There are other video options, even if your museum doesn’t have the resources to dedicate to creating high-quality mini-films. The video feature can be utilized to film “behind-the-scenes” type videos showcasing your institution and areas that may not be seen as often (e.g. collections storage). However, there is no shame in using videos very minimally on your museum’s Instagram account. While photos can be curated and uploaded fairly easily, videos are more of a commitment and require more careful curation in order to yield a high-quality post.
